Chapter Six

Archer

July 14th…

“How about Rowena and I come over for dinner tonight? We’ll bring the food, get a chance to know Mercy the woman?”

“How do you…?”

“Know she’s at your place? I’m a detective,” he reminds me. “I detected.” I quirk a brow at him. “You’ve been smiling, coming in right before your shift when you used to be half an hour early. Rushing out as soon as the day is over.” Then he scoffs, as if he’s about to drop the final proof. “You’re texting and willingly talking on the phone.” Okay, he has me there. I avoid both whenever possible as they extend being social further than I prefer. I want to have all possible forms of contact open in regards to her. Unfettered access whenever possible. It’s why I purposefully went in public, something I loathe aside from working, and purchased a replacement cell. I needed to be able to get her in a moment’s notice.

Overkill? Perhaps, but I don’t give a shit. She’s as safe as I can make her at my apartment, but nothing is perfect as I can’t be with her every minute. Which I hate. I can feel Dallas watching me, waiting for my permission. I nod, granting it, hoping I didn’t just fuck up the best thing to ever happen to me by rushing this introduction because she might not be ready for this step.

Since my declaration, we haven’t actually spoken about it, though things have changed in some ways. While I’m at work, she rests, doing little things here and there to help out as she claims she doesn’t want to feel like a complete mooch. I tried to tell her differently, but I’ve learned she’s quite stubborn when she’s made up her mind.

She’s getting better every day, only requiring frequent breaks as she’s recovering from all the blood loss, and apparently has a problem sitting still for too long. Mercy is a bundle of energy that needs an outlet and she’s decided cooking is a good one as she’s off school for the summer, having taken her last test online while in the hospital. Plus, she admitted she wants to contribute, no matter how many times I’ve told her it’s unnecessary. The first meal was so bad we both laughed after we each tried to hide just how much so by spitting it in our respective napkins. After that, we began taking smaller bites, testing it out before committing to more. By the fourth recipe, she’d nailed it and I’m now reaping the benefits. Of course, I might have to learn how to sew in order to let out my pants with the weight I’m gaining. She assures me she appreciates the squishiness, saying it gives her something to hold onto when we hug. Which my girl loves giving and receiving, as if she’s making up for all she’s missed. When was the last time someone showed her affection? I’m thinking it was Eli. No wonder she’s starved for it.

I intend
